Healthier Holiday Cocktails

Every year we vow to eat less, workout more, and simply take better care of ourselves.  Even with the best intentions, we often get sidetracked; ie..the holidays.

All the big family dinners and the company Christmas parties wreak havoc on our bodies. Before you know it,  it's  January 1st and once again we're making the same New Years resolutions.

One of the biggest culprits in the battle of the bulge might be something you haven't considered.  Many of the holiday wines, beers and cocktails you consume have as many calories as what's on your plate. 

Drinking responsibly can have more than one meaning.  Keep not only the volume in check, but also the calories, sugar, etc. to a lower level as well.

I reached out to a few spirits brands for suggestions on how to consume a little holiday cheer that won't leave you feeling the need to spend hours at the gym the following morning.

#1 - MARGARITA ON THE ROCKS

Robert Tijerina, owner of Titanium Tequila suggests a Gluten free option of tequila on the rocks, but has an option for those that aren't a fan of drinking it straight up! His Gluten free/Low Calorie Skinny Margarita still offers a great taste with a kick!

Titanium Skinny Margarita

• 2oz Titanium Tequila

• 1.5oz Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice

• 1oz Agave Nectar

• 1oz Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice

-Mix Lime juice and agave Nectar. Add Titanium and Orange juice. Add ice and shake ingredients to blend. Pour in glass over ice. Garnish with twisted lime

The juice needs to be squeezed from fresh limes and oranges to be sure it is gluten free as bought juices often add sugars and additives to their juice.

#2 - SOMETHING BUBBLY

The mixologists at Three Hunters Vodka have created a light yet fruity option that is low calorie and should ease the sugar induced hangover brought on by champagne.

COOL HUNTER

2oz Three Hunters Vodka

1oz fresh squeezed lemon juice

1/4oz raw agave nectar

10 - 15 blueberries

Top with club soda or sparkling water

Combine first 4 ingredients in a shaker. Muddle blueberries and add ice. Shake then strain over fresh ice in a Collins/High ball glass. Top with club soda and garnish with 3 blueberries.

#3 - ON THE FLY

And if you find you are short on time (or perhaps patience)

The great folks at Austin Cocktail have a low calorie drink that is simple to make. Just chill and serve! Paradise Found has 100 calories per serving and is made with Vodka, Natural Coconut Water, Stone and Citrus Fruits, Basil and Organic Agave Nectar.
